The 51st Ann Arbor Film Festival audience ballots have been sorted and tabulated and we are very pleased to announce that the Vimeo Audience Awards ($500 each) go to Sam Easterson for Burrow-Cams and Mike Hoolboom for Buffalo Death Mask.

Sam Easterson’s Burrow-Cams (3 min, 2012) features footage from cameras that have been placed inside underground animal habitats. Easterson is based in Hartford, CT and his videos have been included in the Whitney Biennial, dOCUMENTA (13), and the New Museum of Contemporary Art among many other venues. Burrow-Cams is available through Video Data Bank.

Mike Hoolboom’s Buffalo Death Mask (23 min, 2013) centers around a conversation with Canadian painter Stephen Andrews and “returns us to a pre-cocktail moment, when being HIV+ afforded us the consolation of certainty”. Buffalo Death Mask had its world premiere at the 51st AAFF and recently received the prestigious International Critics Prize (FIPRESCI) at the 59th Oberhausen International Short Film Festival. Hoolboom is based in Toronto and has made over fifty films and videos over the past three decades, many of which have been included at the AAFF.
