“…fascinating experimental documentary…
immersive, sensorially complex…as
concerned with the possibilities of the
film medium as they are with this particular
subject…abstract cinema that packs a punch…”
—The New York Times
Emerging from the ethos of Harvard’s
Sensory Ethnography Lab, J.P. Sniadecki’s
attentive documentary approach mixes
perfectly with Joshua Bonnetta’s meditations
on the materiality of film.
—Cinema Guild
El Mar La Mar is an abstract look at the Sonoran Desert on the U.S.–Mexico border. J.P. Sniadecki and Joshua Bonnetta combine oral histories from the area with hand-processed 16mm images of natural elements and belongings left behind by travelers. A sonically rich soundtrack adds to the eerie atmosphere.
