AAFF v. State of Michigan: Ten Years Later

During the last Ann Arbor Film Festival, we hosted the special anniversary panel “AAFF v. State of Michigan: Ten Years Later,” which brought together former AAFF Executive Director Christen Lien (McArdle), ACLU lawyer Michael Steinberg, and Michigan Theater CEO Russ Collins. The topic? To recount how 10 years before, the Festival’s government funding had come under attack by conservative forces in Michigan looking to quash government funding of the arts. The situation was dire. The Ann Arbor Film Festival is pleased to announce that Kyle Stefek has officially joined the Festival as a full time employee! He will carry on in his role as Assistant to the Executive Director and will continue to provide incredible work and support to the Festival’s development and executive needs. Kyle began his time with the Festival as a Development Intern during the 54th AAFF season in 2015, working closely with our Community and Education Partners. After the 54th Festival in March of 2016, Kyle was offered the chance to become a contract employee with the Festival, and after a summer of interning in Los Angeles with Millennium Films, where he took part in script coverage and castin


The Ann Arbor Film Festival is pleased to announce the start of the annual AAFF tour, and for the occasion we have prepared an official trailer, which is now available to view! Beginning in August and continuing through February 2018, the 55th AAFF Tour will visit galleries, art house theaters, universities, media arts centers and cinematheques throughout the world to show off our amazing lineup of experimental, documentary, animation, narrative and hybrid films that played during the 55th Festival. This tour provides an excellent opportunity for people who missed the Festival to see the award-winning films. Each filmmaker participating in the AAFF Tour is also paid for each tour stop, there
